This is definitely a Young Adult book, from the first page you know what you're in for - so when giving this one a shot be very aware that the target audience is teens and young at heart - which is perfectly fine for a book to be. With that out of the way, I’d personally vouch for it as a fun, easy read!

Starting with some of the things I didn’t like so much: The inner-dialogue can be a little repetitive. I would have liked to know more about our main character rather than having the same key trait written in the same way each chapter. In this same vein a lot of the story tells us how characters feel rather than letting us sit with and interpret their actions a little. Things are spelt out a little too often, even for YA.

Generally though, this is a relatively easy read. The magic system is simple to follow but fun. The twists are a little predictable for seasoned readers but perfect for their target demographic, and there are emotional consequences to the protaganists actions. I personally loved Siaorse’s relationship with her sister, and our protagonist herself was flawed but interesting, stubborn and strong. The romance was okay, Hayes wasn’t my favourite love interest ever, but it was readable and enjoyable all the same.
