House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

*there will be spoilers*
My enjoyment keeps going back up and then being shot down in some chapters.
I enjoyed the vibe here most of all. Seaside, manor, gothic. However, the story didn't seem to go along with it.
I am in it for finding out this mysterious curse clouding the family and proving the sister is murdered... but it diverted from that plot a couple of times to focus on Annaleigh and her finding love.
This retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses was more like another story based off of it but not really? Why were there gods and goddesses here? How easily the characters accepted that they do indeed exist and actually do what the people prayed them for.
The romance was bonus that could have been written better. Cassius and Annaleigh were a cute couple but I didn't feel enough connection. He had a mystery over him and that never went away in the end.
I started this and liked it but I was at 40% through and was slugging through finishing it. I wish the MC figured out the mystery even before it was revealed.
