Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
5.0
I was constantly impressed by the way AMERICANAH addressed racism, class, culture, and humanity. Ifemelu is a tough character to fully embrace, at times, and I'm seriously conflicted about her choices even at the conclusion of the book. However, the story felt true, and I can't remember the last time I've had my mind changed so thoroughly by a novel. I thought new thoughts, formed new beliefs, and consistently wanted to come back to read more.
What worked so well was that Ifemelu was a blogger, and so Adichie could include snippets of entirely nonfiction, op-ed type writing without making the book feel propagandistic. That's an impressive feat. I look forward to reading more by Adichie in the future.
