The art is charming - but it gets badly wounded by the text design, to my eyes. Maintaining clear readability for new readers is important, but...it has to be doable in more elegant ways than this. 

Storywise, I think it suffices to say it's for the very young, who will probably be able to follow along without great stumbling blocks. (And crafting that kind of text is also a skill, I'm not being derogatory, but also: this isn't one of those kid stories that'll captivate older audiences)
