Calling for a Blanket Dance by Oscar Hokeah

5.0

Set in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma from 1976 to 2013, we follow a Cherokee-Kiowa-Mexican man, Ever Geimausaddle, throughout his life. The short chapters alternate between the perspectives of Ever’s family members over the years. Each character is incredibly complex and has their own distinct voice while sharing their regrets and hopes. My favorite characters were Ever and the grandfather, Vincent, who reminded me a lot of my own father. Hokeah thoughtfully examines Ever’s struggle with identity and how trauma can echo down several generations. This is a powerful and poignant debut that will resonate with many readers. I highly recommend, especially for fans of multigenerational sagas.
