This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. The author takes you to several sites through the US and elsewhere to interrogate how (or how not) those places are reckoning with the history of slavery. The author is a poet and it shines through in his beautiful and heartbreaking descriptions of these places. Parts of this book left me so angry, but I think this book is vital so that we as a country don’t forget. Remnants of slavery are all around us, as are the effects of slavery that can be seen in daily life.
