Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

5.0

This novel features the seemingly rare overlap of “sophisticated” literature and science fiction. Three friends: Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy (the narrator) grow up in a reclusive boarding school in the British Countryside. They aren’t training though for elite universities or preparing to go into a prestigious career field. Instead they all will grow up to serve a single purpose: to involuntarily donate their vital organs to those in need.

The book is beautifully written; reflecting on childhood friendship, the pitfalls of growing up, and the bleak outlook on the world that we are leaving others to inherit.

I originally gave this one 4 stars because the first 20% or so is an incredibly slow-moving and navel gazer. But, I kept thinking about it over and over after finishing it and I think the powerful conclusion makes up for the slow start. I promise you, if you press through beyond that first part you will be rewarded with a beautifully sad masterpiece.
