Sure, I'll Join Your Cult: A Memoir of Mental Illness and the Quest to Belong Anywhere by Maria Bamford

4.0

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars again. My experience wasn't 4-star worthy but I'm giving 4 stars anyway because the audiobook experience could be a relevant factor here.

That's not to say that there was anything wrong with the audiobook, I quite liked it. It was experimental. Audiobook is such a versatile format that it's actually odd that production companies don't take advantage of that.

Then again, this approach had it's negatives, or at least possible negatives, the biggest of which being that the author is annoying. I say this with love - her being annoying is just a part of her, but I can imagine it being unbearable for some. If you know beforehand that the author is an actress and a voice actor, you probably should be prepared for something else than a monotonous recital.

The biggest problem I had with the book was that there were no cults. She did not join any cult. She discusses AA-derived groups that are kind of culty. Her mental health/illness history was good content, but I still missed the cults. I picked up the book based on the title and was thus a bit disappointed. Still, a solid memoir.
