The Chestnut King by N.D. Wilson
5.0
I read this (and the other two) on my phone this time around, and the amount of screenshots I took of quotes from it is a fair representation of how much I LOVE this book.
Here are a few favorites (from all three books):
- The greatest heroes stand because it is right to do so, not because they believe they will walk away with their lives. Such selfless courage is a victory in itself.
- I have ridden with death, and I have walked beside it. Some say I have sought it. The search would not have been difficult, but I look for the death of my enemies first. When I am called, I will go. But that call has not yet come.
- Self-loathing and self-worship can easily be the same thing. You hate the small sack of fluids that you are, and you would go to any length, and betray anything and anyone, to preserve it.
- Your life is your own, your glory is your glory, but you will lose it if you keep it for yourself. Grasp it for the sake of others.
- "What path is meant for his feet?"
"The one true path."
"What God shall walk before him?"
"The true Gods shall be the God before him."
"What shall be his life?"
"Death."
"What shall be his end?"
"Life."
Oh, and did I mention it's just a great story?
Content warning: incredibly scary, especially for something marketed as "middle grade."
