ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Violet is in her mid thirties and ditched the job she hated and the relationship she wasn't happy in. 3 months after said breakup she meets Evan at a bar and they have a ONS, 3 more months after that Violet is carrying an unexpected bun in her oven and bumps back into Evan randomly where she proceeds to inform him he is going to be a father and then promptly chucks her cookies all over his lawn. Evan or Evander as he is actually known is less than enthusiastic about Violets news and due to past experiences doesn't trust she is telling him the truth, demands a paternity test and the story goes from there.
This was my first book by this author and I knew going in this is book one of a new series and although it can be read as a standalone I will say that there were a lot of side characters introduced or mentioned that clearly came from previous series and the dynamics between all of them and our main couple was somewhat integral to understanding Evanders character and why he was the way he was so I felt somewhat alienated from the story because I was missing that information.
I enjoyed this authors writing style. Her characters and the story had depth and dimensions to them, and there was some good humour & spice. I liked the tension build-up between Violet & Evander, and overall, I enjoyed how their relationship developed. However for me Evanders standoffish attitude and Violet constantly deciding she knew Evanders intentions without asking him, them never being positive in her mind and neither of them just communicating did become repetitive and went on a bit too long for the happy ending to feel truly believable for me. Violet shows great inner strength, and Evanders character doesn't shy away from the things he has experienced and how those shaped him into the character we see initially. I do wish we had got more cute moments surrounding the pregnancy, but im a sucker for an accidental pregnancy trope and would have liked to have a bit more of it thrown in. Overall, this was a great introduction to a new author for me, and I enjoyed it enough that I will definitely be going back and trying more of her work. 🌶🌶
