Before and After by Andrew Shanahan

2.5

Starting the year with an obscure premise that at the very least made me think about life in another body. The story is of a “super obese” man named Ben, and his dog Brown. A zombie apocalypse without flesh eating but consistent violence spreads over the nation, and Ben, who had been in the midst of transport via crane to have his leg amputated is left without food, electricity or knowledge of what and why. It’s relatively short, and has a lot of powerful emotional scenes.

Ben amputates his leg, flies Brown in a carrier to feed and loses the weight he’d been trapped by. Personally, the flashback scenes dragged on slightly and I found myself skipping large sections of factual “This is how to calculate BMI and how to try losing weight”. Some of the knowledge Ben has feels lucky, not so much unrealistic but out of nowhere, the set up for events could have been more fluid and the dialogue was very Hollywood blockbuster. Otherwise, a good read, not my favourite, but I’d understand why someone would recommend it to the right person.
