Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh
slow-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? Character
3.5
Moshfegh's most recent book has a different vibe to the ones I've read so far. It was truly grotesque in ways her previous books weren't. My brain flinched so many times. Don't read a Moshfegh whilst eating.
The themes examined religion and inequality in a mediaeval European-style village. And not a single character was likeable! The plot seems to revolve around misunderstandings stemming from these themes. Normally that would annoy me, but it worked here.
Lapvona felt too long though. The ending could have come sooner and the book still would have sufficiently made its points. While I was expecting this to be one of those that just…ends, I still felt it to be too abrupt. Maybe because it should have been shorter.
Overall I liked what Moshfegh had to say here, but the editing and structure should have been tighter.
