The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance: A Ghost Story for Christmas by M.R. James

4.0

A weird, surreal ghost-adjacent story from M.R. James - part of the delightful Haunted Bookshelf series of ghost stories for Christmas with illustrations by Seth. This wasn't my favorite instalment in the series because it ultimately leaves so many questions unanswered, but it was really interesting. There is a vivid, creepy dream sequence that captures what it's like to have a surreal nightmare. I also appreciated the format of telling the story through letters from an unknown man to his brother.
