Wynd Book One: Flight of the Prince by James Tynion IV

5.0

Wynd is an intriguing story set in a fantasy world. There are magic people - the weirdbloods - and non-magic. And, despite the true history of the world, non-magic humans have come to fear the weirdbloods to the point of killing them and shunning them. Yet, there is only one last non-magic land of the world, compared to the original four.

TRIGGERS: implied genocide, conspiracy, death, loss of family, danger, and being hunted, magic-phobic attitudes.

There's an awesome ally female bestie, a hot vs geek vibe, and a first teen crush trope all mixed into this clever, intriguing storyline with strong LGBTQIA+ themes. Yet, the story also handles some dark themes, and packs an emotional punch. It manages to fit in a full, well explored plot, world building and characterisation for FOUR main characters, with no info dumps or long boring pages of explanation. Everything is seamlessly woven into the storyline and/or dialogue, at places that feel natural, while having a trickle-at-the-right-moment effect.

The world building and characterisation were excellent, and strengthened an epic world with a beautiful storyline and strong message. The artwork was stunning, the story had great pace and a slow but interesting leak of secrets and small reveals that keep you reading. All within a full, cohesive plot, while leaving room for more in Volume 2. I can't wait to read more.

Wynd is a story about finding and trusting yourself, putting others first, finding your courage, and learning to accept yourself and your weirdness, no matter what anyone else says.
