Trespasses by Louise Kennedy
4.0
A character-driven novel full of love stories set against the backdrop of the violent 30-year conflict in Northern Ireland. Mother/daughter - despite the mum's alcoholism, the bond is unbreakable; teacher/pupil - Cushla's love for Davy is indescribable; catholic/protestant - the worst trespass of all: a cross-creed affair. A bit lifeless and repetitive in places but it's compelling and heartbreaking. Kennedy has an incredible eye for detail, very descriptive, made me want to start smoking and drinking! Echoes of Milkman, Shuggie Bane, and No Mate for the Magpie.
