Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

This book really hooked me early in my reading. I got my copy and have been reading at every chance. The story is compelling, gothic (think Wuthering Heights but more creepy) and atmospheric with a plot that has you turning the pages. The story begins after Catalina, the cousin to our protagonist, Noemi, gets married and is taken to live in a mansion on a hilltop shrouded in mist. Catalina is able to mail a strange message to Noemi's father and he is concerned but not sure what to make of it. He sends Noemi to the house to sort out what is wrong with her cousin. Once Noemi arrives, the creep factor escalates throughout the story, from the oddities of the family and the help in the home, to the strange happenings throughout.
I really enjoyed this book and loved the writing. There were a few sections that were confusing at first glance and didn't seem to flow as well as the majority of the story. But overall, this is a highly recommended book.
