This book is truly a gem. I mean what a read. The authors note hit right on the head for a lot of black people and brought more light to the story. I worry about poc that go to all white schools for this very reason.

Even though there was one thing after another happening the pacing and breaking up of the story was good. The dual pov from Chi and Devon was great. Showing how they were from different social status/tax bracket and still since they were black these people thought their life meant nothing. Only a game to them.

-I like Chi’s character. The way she did her best to shield herself at school but we also got to see more of her as the story goes on.
-She seemed to have dealt with self love especially when it came to her hair. It had to be “perfect” to European standards.
-The moment between her and her mom about her name was everything.
-The love interests for both of these characters was a journey.
-I just felt for Devon. Wanting to not be seen and dealing with stuff in his neighborhood. I just wanted to hug him. He had heavy moments.
-The moment he left Dre’s place really hurt. Like how he was able to take his mind elsewhere in that moment of abuse.
-Terrell really had me ready to beat him up but he recovered.
-Jack you low down snake. He deserved what he got.
-Mr. Taylor! For real though, smh.
-Devon’s father though.
-Jamie is the absolutely worst.
-News lady was trifling.
-The twist as things came out got me. Was not expecting that.
*Absolutely loved the ending. Chi getting her lick back! Yes ma’am. Going from not talking before this all popped off to remaining close after all those years. Career, love and being proactive to protect.

“Besides, regardless of whether it’s me or someone else, there will always be a kingdom, a throne and a queen.”
