Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
1.0
This book begs for the extreme. Had to give it either one star or five stars. Given the amount of tears I shed leading up to the mother effing absurd last couple of chapters, I chose the former.
*EDIT: This is hilarious but I’m halfway through a reread and am giving it 5 stars.
*EDIT: I just got to a really painful part and now I remember how agonizing this book was. Gah. Back to one star we go
What a nightmare was this book. I had never been in this much psychological torment in my life before reading it, and that’s honestly saying a lot.
This book is ABSURD. If you want a book where a cute country girl kills a bunch of pheasants with her bare hands and then later she and her estranged husband literally run into Stonehenge by accident, this is the book for you.
A good quote:
"In the ill-judged execution of the well-judged plan of things the call seldom produces the comer, the man to love rarely coincides with the hour of loving. Nature does not often say ‘See!’ to her poor creature at a time wherein seeing could lead to happy doing; or reply ‘Here!’ to a body’s cry of ‘Where?’ till the hide-and-seek has become an irksome, outworn game."
In conclusion, Alec d’Urberville deserves deeper than the furthest depths of Hades. He deserves to be struck by lightning while his head is forcibly held under water while the rest of his body is engulfed in eternal flames and that’s all I have to say on the matter. And um "Angel" doesn’t deserve much better tbh. Every shitty thing I cried about is thanks to these two assholes.
Also, extremely ironic that I read this right after "What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape." Tess of the D’Urbervilles should change its name to of "What We Talk About When We Talk About How Not To Treat Someone Who’s Been Raped Especially If You’re the Lowlife Sack of Flaming Manure Who Raped Her And/Or Literally the Only Person She Trusts in the World (@Angel and her mom)."
Edit: I just watched some of the BBC serial adaptation. As much as I am in love with Eddie Redmayne, it is a sad substitute for the book. Do not recommend, especially since it really humanizes Alex which I am NOT for. He is Satan as far as I’m concerned.
Also if anyone else was utterly destroyed by this book, could you please comment or dm me because I need to talk to someone who knows the pain
