Love as a conscious choice, love as labour, love as antithesis to abuse - I am very much fond of these concepts and it’s good to read about them and actually feel them carve up space and be tangible.

The author is radical in her rhetoric, and while I’m not generally swayed by radicalness as we always seem to bounce from one extremity to the next, I believe sometimes we need to be radical to actually force a change.

Love ethic is genuinely fascinating work to dedicate your life to, seems like something akin to a noble quest, and yet the book is swarmed by trite generalisations; provoking observations are undercut!! by banalities like “if person A approaches person B with love, person B will spread said love,” or “if you prioritise love in your household, the fact that you’re a victim of poverty and cannot feed your family will be a lighter burden to carry.” They’re true at their core, sure, and simultaneously naively diminishing. It makes the thesis ring hollow to me, it has no depth and minuteness which, for example, the analysis of Jacob’s biblical story benefits from.
