The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy by Mariana Mazzucato
3.0
Well this was veeeery dense. Interesting, but too much effort for me to be able to get much positive enjoyment out of reading it. One of those books that confirms and justifies some vague, half-formed notions in your head, especially about what exactly the financial sector is actually contributing to the economy & society in general (spoiler: not much). All centred around an argument that we should be putting the concept of 'value' back into the way we approach economics - I thought the section on 'public value' was particularly interesting. The discussion is mostly around the UK and the US, but there were some interesting comparisons between the two - I think Mazzucato is American but has been based in the UK for a while now so is fairly well-placed to make those in-depth comparisons.
