I love the world and the characters and this is a pretty good sequel. Liz Kerin called this the Night's Edge series in her acknowledgements and I would like more...and a TV show if that is what she's been pitching.

However, I really struggled with the narrative structure which alternates between Mia a few months ago and now, slowly building closer and closer in time. The first book did this between 2010 and now but that was more clear because Mia was a child vs adult. The morphing of this dynamic in the sequel to two really close periods of time was challenging and confusing, especially if you stop mid-chapter. I have aphantasia and dyslexia so maybe others will struggle less. The structure was a painful read and I didn't feel like it added much, apart from stylistically being similar to the first.

I still enjoyed the story and recommend it. I'd be curious if others didn't have any trouble with it. But I sure as hell did.
