This gave me Shannon Hale vibes – achy, magical, and with room of a specific kind of malicious magic. The evilness and horror don't really get to seep in in a way I think I would've preferred, but I still really liked the roughness of the world. And the romance was LOVELY, just immediately giddy-fying. I was very happy with this.
