The Girl With No Reflection by Keshe Chow

adventurous emotional slow-paced

2.5

The girl with no reflection at the every least is a story that will keep you guessing. I vouch whole heartedly that nobody would be able to predict every twist the narrative takes, even if you’re trying to figure it all out. Some are more obvious than others, the hints are all there for every sudden jerk in the road, but the unreliable narrator sells it perfectly. That being said, I think the younger audience the book is catering too holds back the writing. Not only for the details and descriptions (there’s some genuinely dark scenes that I would have loved to delve more into) but also in the way many chapters and revelations feel the need to tell the reader exactly why it has happened. Characters unfortunately turn up feeling flat, often repetitive once their twist / motivation has been revealed.

Overall, the book was unfortunately a little long for me, and while some ‘Wow’ scenes really had me engaged, getting to those parts tended to leave me less inclined to turn the page.

There’s creativity here! A gentle introduction to mythology that I similarly wish we’d seen more of.
I’ll be revisiting Keshe Chow again in her next book, after all this is a debut and a promising one at that. I’m looking forward to seeing her grow as an author.
