City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
4.0
I’m still at the beginning of my journey into fantasy novels but I am really loving it so far!
City of ashes returns to Clary’s life, picking up right from where city of bones ended. Clary becomes further embroiled in the shawdowhunter world as she fights her feelings for someone she can never be with.
I admit, the beginning chapters of this book felt strange to me. Initially I found myself struggling to understand what was happening. I only read city of bones recently but I clearly must have forgotten some of the key end points. After I overcame my slight confusion I loved the beginning section of the book. It felt so comforting to be back with old friends, in a fantasy world that I knew.
Cassandra Clare’s writing is so unbelievably beautiful. It’s almost like her words are wrapping around me in a warm hug. I struggled a little with the middle/end sections. It almost felt a little drawn out and monotonous, hence the loss of one star. I’m also struggling with the relationship between Clary and Jace. It’s hard to think of it as ‘romantic’ when it’s just so wrong! I’m really hoping that it all turns out to be false in a future book because it’s making me feel uncomfortable. That being said, the last two chapters were wonderful and had me feeling so many different emotions! It reminded me just why I’m enjoying this series so much and has left me feeling lighthearted and excited about the series again! Cassandra Clare ended the book with a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see where it goes in the next book!
I would recommend this series to anyone that loves young adult fantasy books!
