If I didn't buddy read this book I would have DNF'd. I hardly ever give books such a low rating, but this one was consistently riding the struggle bus. Neither one of the characters felt developed enough to me and in what was supposed to be a rivals-to-lovers romance, they were kind of just unnecessarily mean to each other for most of the book. I didn't find either of them to be particularly likeable and that didn't change as the story went on. Before I continue on this rampage, I do have to say how much I enjoyed the side characters. The other trivia contestants and Maxine's friends were great and I wish they had more time on the page. I also always love Jewish representation, but even that couldn't redeem Maxine for me. I understand she had childhood trauma, but her lack of awareness and inability to communicate was mind-boggling to me. It made the relationship with Teddy so unbelievable and irritating. Speaking of, I couldn't find any chemistry between these two characters. From the sex scenes that were just haphazardly thrown in the book to the number of times I felt myself cringing while reading, I really couldn't understand how these characters liked each other let alone wanted to be in a relationship. I love spice in books and I hardly ever complain that it's too much, but every instance felt frenzied and it took away time for Maxine and Teddy to have real and vulnerable conversations. I also could not believe the ending. All this build-up and for what? I was immensely disappointed as I LOVED the concept of rival trivia competitors reminiscent of Jeopardy! but I couldn't get on board with this one.
