“Where Are You, Echo Blue?” is a powerful exploration of the culture of celebrity in America. The story follows the disappearance of child star turned movie star, Echo Blue, after she doesn’t show up for her New Year’s Eve appearance in 1999. The point of view switches between Echo describing her rise to fame in the 90s and Goldie, a young journalist with a parasocial relationship with Echo, searching for Echo in the early months of 2000. Echo’s character is a well-documented example of the perils of child stardom and gave me more empathy for nepo babies. I really enjoyed the narration in this audiobook, particularly for the voice of Echo’s agent, Hazel. The ending was a little anticlimactic, but I’m happy with how the characters plot lines resolved. This reminds me a bit of some of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novels, and I think fans of her will enjoy this one.
