This House is Haunted: The True Story of the Enfield Poltergeist by Guy Lyon Playfair

4.0

After seeing films, mini-series, YouTube videos and listening to podcasts based on and exploring the Enfield Haunting, I finally got around to reading the book that started it all. Playfair's account is fascinating, written with passion and verve, and it is apparent that within him resides a frustrated novelist as he takes command of the narrative. Like a good novel, I found myself empathising with the characters, becoming engrossed in the story and reading on well past my bedtime.

I was frustrated that Playfair's final conclusions seemed to be at odds with his earlier opinions, and the wealth of evidence he helped to collect. It is clear that the case is very mysterious and improbable, yet the temptation to believe in the supernatural elements is strengthened chapter-upon- chapter. We are reminded that, while we might know more than we once did, we would be foolish if we thought we knew it all.
