I may have had my expectations too high for this book because I know people who really love it. It's... okay? I liked it a lot more after the robot showed up; the monk hadn't really been coming alive for me as a character before then. Now that I've finished it, I'm not ruling out trying the sequel, but it's not something I feel particularly urgent about.
