Glitterland by Alexis Hall

This is a brilliantly written M/M romance that balances biting humor, profound sadness, and an undercurrent of hope. Told from the perspective of Ash, a bipolar and depressed writer, the novel dives deep into his struggles with mental health, social anxiety, and the scars of his past.
Ash’s journey takes an unexpected turn when he meets Darian, an exuberant Essex model he nicknames the “glitter pirate.” Their dynamic is electric: Ash is reserved, cynical, and grumpy, while Darian is chatty, cheerful, and occasionally (yet charmingly) annoying. The stark contrast between them creates a relationship that is both entertaining and heartwarming. Despite their differences, Ash finds moments of happiness with Darian—something he thought was beyond his reach.
The story is unflinchingly raw, especially as it explores Ash’s inner turmoil, yet it’s also surprisingly humorous. Alexis Hall’s sharp wit shines throughout, making even the heaviest moments feel authentic and relatable.
The narration adds another layer of brilliance; if you have the chance, I highly recommend the audiobook version—it’s a game-changer.
This was my first book by Alexis Hall, and I’m so glad I gave it a chance. The writing is exceptional, the characters unforgettable, and the emotional payoff deeply satisfying. If you’re a fan of M/M romance with complex, beautifully flawed characters, Glitterland is a must-read.
