A quiet, reflective story about Agnès, a French peasant girl who has a complicated friendship with Fabienne. Told many years after the end of that friendship, Agnès shares her years as an almost-forgotten child who doesn't really connect with anyone, her desire to please the domineering Fabienne, her brief experience with fame.
I don't think I've read a story that so effectively describes the intimacy and confusion of a friendship like that. The girls are odd, and the story doesn't go far, but it hits the right nostalgic and reflective and warm notes. Agnès tells her story with the wide eyes of a child, but the wisdom of an adult looking back at a time in her life. It's a little bit sad, but in a time-gone-by way.
