The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

5.0

Second time through, 2021:

Wow. I am impressed anew by MWT's sheer genius. Friends, if you haven't read this book, do yourself a favor and read it. It's contemplative and exhilarating all at once and the twists are so, so good. Read it now so you don't get spoiled for the ending, because that ending! is amazing!

(I'd name my son Eugenides if it didn't sound a little too much like eugenics. Thanks to my mom for putting that connection in my brain.)

ORIGINAL REVIEW, 2020:

First: If you have not read any Queen's Thief novels (which is amazing, because you have such an adventure ahead of you), do not read any reviews. Do not look up any fanart. Trust me, you don't want to be spoiled for the crazy awesome reveals that are coming your way!

Second: Definitely read these books in publication order. I know the author says they're standalones, but I disagree. You're going to understand the world so much better if you start with this one and read in order.

My actual review: This book was slow, but I liked it. The pace allowed us to get to know the characters. Gen was adorably funny (he really reminds me of Sage from the False Prince books) and the ENDING. *sigh* I loved it.
