Short stories, fragments, poems about occasionally interrelated Maori and W̱SÁNEĆ women from before contact with Europe through to a dystopian flooded future. The concept is really interesting, and I liked a lot of the writing and characters, but for me I just never got enough of each story. It felt like a page or two or something, then something else, then something else, but often they weren't strong enough to stand alone as short stories, so the whole thing just felt scattered and didn't work for me. Maybe I just didn't understand what the author was trying to do? I did like a couple of the individual pieces, especially the story about a magical connection between a W̱SÁNEĆ and Maori village that allowed some women to canoe between them. I appreciated all the queer women in this, and am interested in what else the author is up to.
