Once again, Brandon Sanderson has enthralled me into another one of his worlds. After reading Mistborn, I knew Sanderson had me. So when my friend sent me this (and another!) Brandon Sanderson book, I knew that I would not be disappointed.
We follow Tress, a 17 year old girl who has to traverse the seas after the love of her life is unfortunately taken from her whilst he was out at sea. She has to go from a simple window washer on a small island, to surviving on the seas of deadly spores that populate the seas instead of water.
The first thing I noticed about this book was the writing. The narrator of this book is a character that you meet in the story and it is honestly hysterical. It's so casual and full of small bits of sarcasm and sass and just not serious. This is very different from the writing in Mistborn, however I like it as it reflects the character who's narrating it. Some people may not find his sense of humour funny, but I was giggling all throughout the book.
I'm not sure if all versions of this book have the art, but if you have them in the book, consider yourself blessed. My version did not have the art but my lovely friend printed them all off for me (Lord bless you Andrea x) I loved the art in the book and it helps me a lot to visualise things as I have aphantasia. The art style was absolutely gorgeous and I wish more books had this!
The main character Tress, is such a sweet character. I liked her from the start but it took some time for me to love her character. I'm still not sure if I absolutely love her character; I don't feel emotionally invested but I definitely don't dislike her character. I loved watching her grow and you do see her get a bit more of an edge as she encounters more and more dangers.
All the other side characters also had me laughing. Each one has their own little things about them that just make me laugh. I have to say, I think my favourite character would be Ulaam. He is just so funny and unique but he has small bouts of wisdom from time to time. All the characters have their little perks but they also have a little bits to add to the story.
The plot of this story sounds slightly cliché and generic, however the world that this all happens in make it anything but. Sanderson always blows me away with the creativity of his world because the world revolves around spores that fall from the moons. It's not something I've ever seen before and I was so intrigued in the world-building and how everything worked.
Though I did love following Tress, I did find my attention wandering at points. I think there are parts where it got a little slow but overall it was very hooking. As with Mistborn, Sanderson always has great detail in action scenes that I adore. Any time there was some action going on, I was on the edge of my seat as I followed it.
I had already predicted the twist at the end but for majority of the book, I was mostly clueless. The overall plot was a little generic, but as I said before, the world-building helps a lot to spice up the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fantastical and felt a little bit like a fairytale. I didn't emotionally invest in any characters, but I did love (nearly) every single character that I came across in this book. I highly recommend if you want an easy read and enjoy a good epic fantasy with a touch of romance.
