The Brick Bible: The New Testament: A New Spin on the Story of Jesus by Brendan Powell Smith

4.0

Like the Bible, Brendan Powell Smith's take in LEGO is kinda controversial, at least judging by the reviews here on Goodreads! As an atheist who grew up in a Christian church I was very amused by the images used to illustrate the weirder elements of the New Testament, especially the Book of Revelations, which, let's face it, is a wild ride even in its non-LEGO version. This volume is divided into three parts, with the first combining the Gospels to tell the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. This part is mostly familiar content for anyone who grew up in a Christian church, and the imagery is pretty straightforward but still amusing because LEGO. The second part covers the Acts of the Apostles, but all the many epistolary books that fall between Acts and Revelations are omitted - a choice that I don't really have an issue with just because how would you depict them in LEGO? I'm not even sure you could come up with interesting drawings for things like Paul's opinions on a process for Gentiles converting to Christianity. Then part three is Revelations.

I can imagine if you're someone with strong belief about the content of the New Testament that this might be an uncomfortable read, though it could also be used as a fun intro to Bible for those new to the content. But even as a non-believer I found myself cringing a lot at how much John demonizes Jewish people, in both the Book of John (which makes some panels in the first part on the Gospels really stand out in this book - in not a good way) and the Book of Revelations. That's faithful to the original, and it's not like there are no other questionable lessons in this volume, but I wondered if it deserved a footnote or other contextualization to acknowledge the anti-Semitism.
