Summoned to Thirteenth Grave by Darynda Jones
5.0
***4.5 stars***
Like all final books in a series, I approached this one with not a little bit of trepidation. How can all the loose ends possibly be tied up in a satisfactory way?
I'm glad to say that Thirteenth Grave didn't disappoint! I honestly didn't think Darynda Jones could surprise me after all that has happened, but I should have known better. She always has a few tricks up her sleeve.
Though the stakes are high, Charley never disappoints in lightening the mood with her crazy inner monologue and quippy banter between the gang.
Saying goodbye to beloved characters is always hard, but hopefully we'll see a spin-off series in the near future!

SPOILERY THOUGHTS
What didn't work for me:
I was a little let down by the way that Charley and Reyes have to watch over Beep incorporeally. They are just hanging out in space with no bodies for the next 25 years or so? For the last few books, Charley and Reyes have struggled with the fact that they are unable to hold their daughter and watch her grow. Sure, they will be observing her life, but Beep won't have that same opportunity to get to know her parents and that is inherently sad to me. At what point will they stop shielding Beep and come back to the human plane? How will it feel to Beep to suddenly have these parents that she's heard of but never seen?
Random biological son of Earl Walker makes a brief appearance as a psychopath and then is killed off. I guess he will be one of the souls that Lucifer will send back in Beep's story. It was too random otherwise.
Shocking Moments:
Charley's mom was a prophet and died fighting off a demon while simultaneously giving birth... What a badass!
Uncle Bob is the archangel Raphael ?!?! Holy shit!
Gemma was really dead the entire book! I was so sad that she didn't make it.
David Taft had an off-screen death that was very casually mentioned at the end of the book. (I think he deserved better)
Rocket has a grandson that will continue writing names.
Rocket, Blue, and Strawberry crossed through Charley and I kind of lost it at that point. Big blubbering mess!
"Where is Osh?" <--- that's how it ends and now I'm like why would you do this to me, Darynda? Where is my bae? What happened to him? When will we see him again?
