Exiles by Jane Harper

5.0

I don’t think I could have loved this third and final installment in Jane Harper’s Aaron Falk series anymore if I tried!

As with her other books, the backdrop for this book is breathtaking and adds an extra element to the overall feel of the book. This time we are taken to the beautiful South Australian wine country where Aaron heads to attend his best friends, Raco & Rita (from The Dry), baby’s christening. He attended last year too but the christening was cancelled due to a woman going missing and leaving her 6-week-old baby abandoned at the annual local food and wine festival. When he returns a year later, he witnesses how this tragic event has impacted all the new friends he made last time and the community. Unable to help himself, he begins to investigate and discovers there are a lot of long held secrets in this small town which may provide the answers to this mystery.

A chance meeting with a beautiful and interesting woman adds an extra dimension to the storyline as we see Aaron begin to question if there needs to be more to his life than just his hectic investigative work for the AFP.

There are so many things I enjoyed in this book. As usual with a Jane Harper book, the crime being investigated is nuanced and well written to keep you guessing. I enjoyed seeing a different side to our main character – it felt like a progression his in life – and I loved all the references to characters and events that played out in the previous books particularly The Dry. It was so nice to revisit these and see where life had led after.

Overall, I felt this book was a highly satisfying last chapter in the Aaron Falk story and highly recommend to anyone who has read the previous books. Once again, Jane Harper has created the perfect mix of compelling storyline, atmospheric scenery, and authentic characters.
