I really do get the sense that his ambitions come from a genuine place. In this book he bothered to see the readers as smart enough and complex enough to look at the issues from two sides, even if they were just top level conversations. What's more interesting is his belief that you can govern effectively from the center or the grey area, not just be political from the center. I hope he's right.
