The novella follows Jo, an exchange student going to university in the UK. She finds living arrangements with a seemingly nice fellow student in a nontraditional living space, a reclaimed and still dilapidated factory. What follows is a whirlwind of a queer awakening amongst increasingly disturbing layers of horror, where the lines between plant and human begin to blur simultaneously with the division between nightmares and reality. This was a quick read with a grotesque approach to its prose and imagery ā€” at some turns erotic and others ruminating on mold and ooze and bodily fluids.

I enjoyed it, but it is definitely a weird book ā€” sensual in a way that is the mental equivalent of the film on top of a glass of milk. Iā€™d recommend it to readers similar to myself, who like weird girls and unclear endings and messiness in their speculative horror.
