Lee Chong’s grocery, while not a model of neatness, was a miracle of supply. …. Lee’s position in the community surprised him as much as he could be surprised.

Chapter 1 of Cannery Row by John Steinbeck starts. I just knew this would be something delightful, I was not disappointed.

There is a story but there isn’t a story, not one which is really marked out with a beginning, middle, and end. Like our own lives, its many moments strung together, some amazing, some regrets, and some full of laughter and happiness. As I turned the last page it was nice to think the book ends but the lives of Lee, Doc, Dora, Mack and the Boys, and all the other residents of Cannery Row continue.

This is a very beautiful read, the kind that makes you think, yes, this is life.
