I am really glad I at least knew a little bit about Korean culture going into the book. The way Han Kang portrayed social and cultural expectations while emphasising the male gaze and misogyny was horrifyingly good. Even though I was hooked from the beginning, I felt like the second half of the book lacked something that I can’t put into words (and I’m not talking about plot).
