Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

2.0

A pleasant (or: just about as pleasant a read about toxin-infested environments and creepy children can be!) read. Well-written and paced, every sentence seemed to serve a purpose, the dialogue structure proving to be a refreshing take on how a story can be told. As someone who started this book with the intention of bring creeped out, put off and perhaps haunted, I found myself not particularly satisfied with this book. It was good, definitely, but there was something missing. The atmosphere — which was haunting nonetheless — would have benefited from a few more descriptions, to support the plethora of creepy events and figures the author used to unsettle us readers. I didn’t mind the fragmented structures, but I also didn’t feel like I was left with too many open questions.

All in all: a refreshing and quick read that could have aimed a bit higher, but didn’t disappoint.
