The Best of Me by David Sedaris
5.0
Having read all of his books, been to numerous readings, and having met him at each reading, I sometimes feel like I’m visiting an old friend when I read David Sedaris’ work. That’s not to say that we are friends, but after so long reading his essays about his life, it has grown into something familiar, comfortable, and welcome. The images that I have in my mind of his family, his life in Paris with Hugh, the Sea Section in North Carolina, and his travels are very deeply ingrained and have taken on a life of their own. Reading this newest, which is a greatest hits of sorts, was a welcome adventure to move from 2020 into 2021. There was, of course, copious laughter, but also the warmth of something familiar, and a renewed appreciation for his ability to capture seemingly minute moments in life with such honesty, and detail.
