Out the gate, I was taken by the long game. There's a lot of setup needed to make this novel work. It's done well, in a way that drew me in and kept me dreaming about my summers spent camping in the ADKs. If you know the Adirondacks at all, you'll greatly appreciate the effort put in to capture the essence of the North Country.
As the novel progresses and the stories unfold, the beautiful disasters tumble forward at break neck speed. There is tragedy and mystery in those woods, and our myriad of narrators and timelines present them in such a way that you feel immersed in the search for the truth.
Additionally, if you're at all familiar with the area and its famous serial killer, you'll find yourself even more interested (and again, appreciative of the groundwork done to make this novel ring true).
Overall, a really enjoyable read. 4 star read for me, because there were some spots where the novel felt a bit verbose, giving me the feeling it could've been shortened by about 100 pages (this novel clocks in near 500).
