Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard
5.0
insightful
This was a surprisingly heartfelt read for me. I’m African American but I love reading about other cultures’ customs. It was so interesting to read how fry bread came to be an important delicacy in Native American homes due to government-influenced food deserts. Fry bread to Native Americans carries a similar importance and relevance as Soul food to African Americans, it seems. Best part was the illustrations of the diverse faces of native Americans who come in all colors and backgrounds: just like there’s no one way to make fry bread, there’s no one definition what it means to be Native American. This is a cute and deeply informative illustrated book that I think kids will love.
