Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix
5.0
The perfect blend of horror and historic realism, a group of girls find themselves abandoned by their families in a home for “wayward girls”, all pregnant at a young, unmarried, age in 1970’s Florida. Isolated in an old house in the woods, they are forced to give birth secretly in order to not bring shame upon their families.
In a time where women had very few rights, were forced into gender roles, shamed for their sexuality and left in the dark about their bodies, these girls are forced to grow up too quickly as they all get hurt and lied to by everyone they love and trust.
Lied to by the men who claimed to care about them who really just wanted to use them, their families who claimed to love them unconditionally, the social workers who say they’re looking out for their best interest, and the doctors who tell them their morning sickness is in their head or that the childbirth that will inevitably rip them open won’t hurt. It’s enough to drive you mad…or enough to seek revenge.
The girls are given a choice to take back their power that was stolen from them, to walk away from a society and a system that landed them there by honing their pain into witchcraft. But at what cost?
When you’ve already paid the ultimate price in sacrificing your body, mind, and spirit, what’s left to lose? After all, “those who want power must learn to take it.”
