As a suspense novel it was quite all right but as a work of historical fiction it is lacking. As a Dutch person who studied historical literature with a special interest in the Golden Age, I found this book very annoying.
A slice of Gouda (ou as in gown) for breakfast? Gouda is a city, who eats cities for breakfast? And if the author means Goudse kaas (cheese from Gouda) than she should write that. But it is more logical that they would eat Edammer (cheese from Edam).
Another point of annoyance: a woman's shrill countryside accent. No accent in the Netherlands is more shrill than the Amsterdam accent...
And what's with the half translation of street names? Old Hooghstraat? Why not just write Oude Hooghstraat or Old Highstreet.
It would have been smart to have a Dutch person read it before publication.
