The One by John Marrs
5.0
OMFG WOW I LOVED THIS!!
It's like Match and Ancestry had a baby...and it tuned out to be the spawn of Satan! Imagine living in a world where you send in your DNA and can find "the one" your genetics say you're destined to be with! It sounds great, right? WRONG!
What if you felt you identified as straight your whole life and your match turns out to be someone of the same sex? What if you find out your match is already married? What if you find out your match is dying of cancer and you only have a few weeks left together? What if your match is a serial killer? What if your match is already dead? These are all situations that follow the characters in this multi-POV book. We follow the stories of Mandy, Christopher, Jade, Nick and Ellie.
Mandy, after being recently divorced, is determined to find her match, have a family and get her happily ever after. Only to discover her young, handsome match has already passed away.
Jade needs a change of scenery. After being matched and chatting with a great guy from Australia she decides to take a leap of faith and flies out to surprise him...only to discover he's been harbouring a secret.
Nick is perfectly happy with his life with his financee, Sally. But after she insists that they take the test just to make sure they are, indeed, as meant-to-be as they feel and Nick is discovered to be matched with another man, he begins to question just how happy he really is with Sally.
Ellie is an extremely successful CEO, who rarely lets her guard down and allows others into her life...until she meets her match.
Christopher is a serial killer.
Now if you're reading this thinking "spoiler alert, much?!?!!" I promise you none of this even begins to describe just how twisted each of these characters' storylines become. I enjoyed them all, but Nick was my absolute favourite and, while each storyline had a crazy (or at least interesting) plot twist, Ellie's was by far the craziest!
The whole story played out as something that could have been very real and that hooked (and somewhat scared) me from the first chapter. This novel was so compelling, gripping and thought provoking. I found myself trying to figure out what I would do in certain situations and found myself almost rooting for characters I definitely shouldn't have been rooting for (i.e. Christopher); but that's what made Marrs' writing so great! He was able to suck me in and had me so engrossed that I wanted all the characters to have a HEA...or as close as they could get in a book like this.
I'm not sure if this author has any other books or if they're going to be releasing anymore books but if he does in this genre, I'll be picking it up! If you were going through a (psych thriller) book rut, pick this up and put an end to it... it may just be your book match!
