This has got to be one of the most unique concepts for a book I have ever seen. The book is split into 2 parts. The first parts follows two plots and the second part follows one of the plots. This makes more sense once you get into part two. I will admit that the ending to part one had my jaw on the floor. I had to stop reading for the day due to how unexpected it was.

The world building is beautifully done, though I did struggle to picture certain things, whether that's due to lack of descriptive writing or my lack of imagination. As you read the book, you gradually learn more and more about the world that the family have been surviving in.

The characters itself were also well written. Each one had their own strong characters and role and you get glimpses of their “past lives” throughout the book as well. There are quite a few characters to remember, but you get familiar with them as you follow these characters very closely throughout the whole book. I had no issues with remembering who was who.

The last few chapters had me incredibly hooked as I got increasingly excited alongside the characters. It also was the most action packed part of the book which gripped me. For most of the book, there isn't really any interaction with other families in the world which I think would have been interesting to see.

The mystery of how they got into this world is still largely unresolved which does leave it feeling quite unfulfilled. I would assume that this would have been resolved in the second book “The Book Of Clouds”, however that book has not been released. Due to this, the ending feels slightly unresolved but this doesn't bother me too much as I think the book can be read as a standalone for the most part.

At the time of writing these books, Theo Clare unfortunately passed away. However, her writing has been widely enjoyed by fans worldwide and she will forever be remembered through her books. I would highly recommend this book if you're not too fussy about having a very neat, clean end.
