The Lady from the Black Lagoon by Mallory O'Meara

4.5 stars

I'm so happy that Mallory O'Meara's passion for Milicent Patrick lead to her to writing this book. This is a story that needed to be told. Millicent Patrick certainly deserves the credit for designing the Creature from the Black Lagoon. She was clearly a talented artist whose strength and independence got her amazing job opportunities that she never fully got the acclaim she deserved from.

This is one of those biographies that heavily focuses on the story of the authors research into the topic. I know that is not everyone's cup of tea, but I don't mind it. In fact, in this case I felt it added to story making it very obvious how forgotten Milicent's legacy had become. Milicent had several name changes that made that research all the harder to conduct for this book. O'Meara did a great job of compiling what she could find and making it into a story. There were times I was concerned that her own personal ideas and interpretations were being written as facts, but everything she claims seems to have been given a resource by the end. I didn't care for the writing style. It almost reads like a blog, very modern and full of jokes. It wasn't so horrible that I wasn't always excited to get back into reading though. Ultimately, Milicent Patrick would have never gotten the credit for creating the monster had it not been for this book.
