The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

4.0

The way this story ties into White Smoke is one of favourite things, I feel there's so much dimension to this town and the characters in it. The shock factor this book provides is immense and definitely a vital reminder that these issues exist. Nothing is held back, we get blatant discrimination from both White characters and internalised racism from Black characters aswell.

Maddie was a very fascinating character to read about, she was multi layered and complex in a way that kept me engaged in learning her story and understanding more about her powers and what really happened on prom night.

The use of podcasts and news articles was exciting, it kept the story moving at a good pace and was a great way to insert information that we needed to know without feeling infodumpy or out of place in the story.

My favourite thing about this book is it talks of the systemic racism that existed in the 60s and we follow a town that never abolished these rules and to me this seemed impossible but that's why it's so important for me to read books such as these to realise that I'm wrong. As a White person, it is of vital importance that we read literature from Black authors on racism and listen to them. This book is the perfect reminder to check your priviledge and remind you that performative activism that benefits you is NOT something you should be proud of and does not assist the Black community.

My one criticism of this book is the way that Kendrick emotionally, and could be argued physically, cheats on his girlfriend. I'm not sure if there's a vital reason for this to have been included that maybe just went over my head but I felt it distracted from the important parts of the story and misdirects some of the readers anger from the more vital topics at hand.

As always TDJ has smashed it with this book and I really hope everyone picks this up and learns from it! A great book and I'm excited for all future works published by Jackson.
